Still waiting for that one perfect smartwatch that will wrap all of your favourite functions around your wrist? Well, maybe it's time to stop waiting and just make your own already.
Update: BLOCKS smashed its funding goal on Kickstarter and is now available to pre-order here for $330 (£233).
You’ll be delighted to hear that we’re not being sarcastic. Meet BLOCKS, the world’s first modular smartwatch that lets you cobble together your very own customised smartwatch that includes all of the important functions you need in your life.
The main watch face, or ‘core’, as BLOCKS is calling it, incorporates the standard smartwatch features you’d expect, like phone notifications, activity tracking, voice activation, a colour touchscreen, and Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, with customisable interfaces to match your style. All that’s missing? A strap.
That’s where it’s time to get creative. The BLOCKS strap is made up of several links, or ‘modules’, each with its own smart function like an LED torch light, NFC payment, or a heart rate tracker. It’s down to you to choose what modules you want, and then all you have to do it connect them together. It takes just seconds, and the possibilities are endless.
BLOCKS has around 1,500 developers on board to develop modules to connect to your smartwatch, so new modules will be released continually, meaning you can strap on all of the latest smartwatch tech as soon as it’s available. BLOCKS also operates on an open platform, so any company could choose to develop modules if they wanted.
Amongst the modules now available for your BLOCKS smartwatch are an extra battery module, GPS, an adventure module (with altitude, pressure, and temperature sensors), a fingerprint module, and even one that detects your stress levels.
The cheapest pre-order offer on the BLOCKS Kickstarter campaign is $285 (£184), getting you a BLOCKS core, and four strap modules.
