Got empty seats in your car? Make some extra cash by sharing your journey.

A popular french app called BlaBlaCar has sailed across the channel with the promise of connecting people who need to travel with drivers who have empty seats.

Kind of like Airbnb for car owners, anyone with a car can sign up, create a profile and offer up their empty seats to budget travellers who need to get from A to B on the cheap. And if you’re one of those budget travellers, you can expect to pay around £14 to get from Manchester to London, and as little as £8 from Edinburgh to Newcastle. Awesome.

Once you’re signed up, you can add preferences to attract the right kind of travellers. Stuff like whether you chat a lot, if you like to listen to music while you drive and whether pets are allowed are all clearly advertised when you offer a ride.

You can upload a photo and write a mini bio too, which all helps towards prospective car sharers not thinking you’re a creepy kidnapper. BlaBlaCar will also ask you to verify your ID and phone number to make sure you’re legit. The same goes for hitchhiking BlaBlaCar users too.

After that, it’s a simple case of telling BlaBlaCar every time you’re planning on making a journey. Just fill in some quick details about where you’re travelling, what time you’re setting off and how many seats you have spare, and wait for other BlaBlaCar users to scoop up your offer.

The one tiny caveat at this point is that BlaBlaCar is still a relativity new thing in the UK, so it’s pretty much limited to major cities at the moment.

It’s still worth a punt though – and definitely an app to keep an eye on. The app is absolutely massive in France, with French drivers and hitchers accounting for a huge chunk of the app’s 30 million users. We’re predicting Uber-scale popularity once it catches on in the UK.

You don’t have to have the app or an account to see if there’s a ride up for grabs, either. Just go to the BlaBlaCar website to do a quick ride check. The app is available on both Android and iOS phones.
