You'll never worry about breaking the speed limit again if Ford's new system has its way
Ford’s new European S-MAX cars will be able to read road speed signs and adjust speeds helping drivers avoid fines, reducing the risk of accidents.
The new system, called Intelligent Speed Limiter, scans any European road sign and prevents the car from exceeding the maximum speed limit for that stretch of road. It’s effective, according to Ford, at speeds ranging for 20-120mph, and works by reducing the flow of fuel to the engine, in order to effect a smooth deceleration.
Drivers can activate the system via their steering wheel controls and it will adjust to changing speed limits along a stretch of road.
“Drivers are not always conscious of speeding and sometimes only becoming aware they were going too fast when they receive a fine in the mail or are pulled over by law enforcement,” said Stefan Kappes, active safety supervisor, Ford of Europe. “Intelligent Speed Limiter can remove one of the stresses of driving, helping ensure customers remain within the legal speed limit.”
The new system is available in all new Ford S-MAXs, from £24,545.
