They will provide WiFi, a printer and scanner, and tea for one.

The red telephone box has been an iconic British fixture since the early 20s, but the rise of the smartphone has reduced most of them to mere roadside antiques – only really useful if you get caught in the rain or fall short of phone battery.

But thanks to a New York company called Bar Works, the humble old telephone box is about to be given a fresh lease of life. Equipped with WiFi and all sorts of mod-cons for the 21st century entrepreneur, 15 telephone boxes in the UK are about to be turned into tiny cosy offices for one.

A subscription to the “Pod Works” scheme will give you access to any of the old telephone box-turned-office pods dotted about London, Leeds and Edinburgh for just £19.99 a month – any time of day or night. You’ll get WiFi access, a printer and scanner, a 25-inch monitor, wireless mouse, plug powerbank, and a hot drinks machine.

You’ll be able to book yourself a stint in one of the Pod Works telephone boxes via a smartphone app, which will run a 24/7 booking service to squeeze you in (literally) whenever is most convenient.

There’s no word when the Pod Works micro offices will be open for business, but Bar Works says its plans to gradually extend the service to more disused BT telephone boxes across the UK. You can find out more about Pod Works here.
