Turns out a smart home isn't smart without a beating heart (pardon the poetry)...

Among the many reasons that we love the smart home is the fact that it’s a breeding ground for weird and wonderful metaphors. On the weird side is the undeniably creepy Mother hub, a maternal gadget that wants to parent your smart home with its gang of “cookies”, and which we’d rather not say or think much more about.

On the more wonderful side? The Animus Heart – the beating lifeblood that keeps your smart home’s many organs working in harmony together. Or in a literal sense, the smart home hub that makes your devices work together. Maybe that’s enough of the metaphors…

Actually, once you strip away the metaphors, what you’re left with is actually just another smart home hub. Don’t get us wrong, though – it’s got the smarts to rival the top dogs. Animus Heart can play nice with products from the likes of Philips Hue, Nest, Samsung, Sonos and more, putting the power of home automation at your fingertips in a single app.

With just a bit of the old tappy-swipey, you can turn on your smart thermostat from the sofa, schedule the TV to turn on when your favourite show starts, and even create a scene of bliss for when you arrive home from work with lights down low, coffee machine bubbling, and your favourite playlist oozing from your Bluetooth speakers.

There’s also some fun to be had with some IFTTT-style smart home recipes called hApps, which are little micro-rules for making your devices work together in clever ways. Get an email every time your motion sensors detect something, for instance, or have your smart kettle automatically boil when your smartphone is close to home on your way home from work. Animus lets you share all of your hApps in the hApp World with other users too, which is rather nice.

Animus Heart is on the brink of nailing its funding goal over on Indiegogo, where you can pre-order it for $145 (£100).
