It's way more beautiful than you'd expect a voice-controlled egg to be.

You’re forgiven if you haven’t heard of Whyd; until recently, it was simply a French social network for music lovers. You might want to swill that name around in your mouth for a moment, though, because there’s a strong chance it’s about to reach Sonos levels of audio tech greatness.

It’s moving into the audio hardware business, and its debut speaker, simply called Whyd, is up for pre-order right now. And there’s a lot to be impressed about – not least its strangely alluring minimalistic egg vibe.

Whyd speaker glass touch panelThis speaker has voice-control, which puts apps like Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, Tidal and Google Play Music just a quick word away. Tell it to fire up your morning playlist, or request your favourite artist out loud, and it will dutifully beam tunes from your music source of choice. Like a silent Amazon Alexa.

You can control Whyd from anywhere in the room by speaking, but if you’re close, you can use Whyd’s glass touch interface to control your music directly. Tap on the glass to play a song, swipe to go to the next, zoom with two fingers to increase the volume – it certainly sounds like a refreshingly intuitive way to toggle your tunes.

Whyd appPhone control is, of course, another option. The Whyd app for iOS and Android makes sure you’re never far from the full array of speaker controls.

When it comes to sound quality, we don’t make that Sonos reference lightly. Whyd’s 360 crystal-clear sound is thanks to four 40mm drivers, partnered with a 100mm subwoofer for booming bass. That’s topped off with Class-D amplifiers to achieve a more powerful sound. Wrap your ears around the full tech specs here.

Whyd’s pre-order price tag is $299 (around £229), and with the eventual retail price sitting at a tall $399 (around £383), that’s a deal you don’t want to miss out on. Pre-order it here.
